DEI on Scrapple Letters

Why does DEIA Matter?

Building a workplace that values Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) is essential for fostering innovation and a strong team culture. Although it is ideal to invest in professional training, there are also less expensive ways to incorporate DEIA learning into your company. Here are some practical and impactful approaches to making DEIA education accessible to your team.

1. Professional Training for Key Team Members

If a full-team training session isn’t feasible, consider funding training for a smaller group of employees. They can then lead workshops and discussions, ensuring the entire team benefits from expert insights.

2. Attend Local DEIA Events as a Team

Look for local seminars, networking events, or workshops on DEIA topics. Attending as a group encourages learning from one another and provides a forum for open conversations about using these lessons in the workplace.

3. Use Free High-Quality Online Resources

There are many reputable free DEIA resources available. Consider these options:

  • Unconscious Bias: Watch Verna Myers’ TED Talk, How to Overcome Our Biases?
  • LinkedIn Learning: Explore free DEIA courses and webinars available on LinkedIn, many of which are taught by industry experts.
  • Disability Rights: Check out the Disability ChUK website for accessible workplace guidance.

4. Host Internal DEIA Discussions

Gather your team for short, engaging discussions based on selected DEIA resources. You can watch a TED Talk together, read an article, and then facilitate an open conversation on how these insights apply to your workplace.

5. Embed DEIA into Daily Practises.

Applying DEIA principles to daily operations is more important than merely providing training. Incorporate DEIA talks into team meetings, assess hiring and promotion procedures, and make sure policies are inclusive.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

Even small steps can drive meaningful change. Whether you invest in professional training or utilise free resources, the key is consistency. Regular engagement in DEIA initiatives creates an inclusive workplace where everyone thrives.
